Yet another Ploopy review

Yet another Ploopy review

Some background: I've used a Kensington Slimblade for years. I love the old thing, but I've grown frustrated by:
  • The super-cheap feel of the plastic and/or switches (hard to tell which is responsible for the “spongy” response).
  • The lack of wrist support. Because it's angled “up”, the only way to rest your arm is to put your wrist in a harmful position. To avoid this, I usually hover my hand above the ball, supported by my thumb and pinky that act as pillars, but it's not great by any means.
  • The absence of GNU/Linux configuration software, which means I lose one of the Slimblade best features when using my personal laptop (the ability to simulate other keys when clicking several buttons at once, and set it on a per-application basis. Fantastic to, for example, send Firefox a fake Ctrl + W when hitting the two top buttons).
Without further ado, here are my thoughts (and please forgive whatever mistake you may find in these lines — English isn't my mother tongue):

  • The rollers are a delight to use compared to the “rubys” found on the Slimblade. A bit loud, especially when you throw the ball at full speed to the other side of an ultrawide screen, but the mechanical sound is extremely satisfying. They don't seem to require much cleaning either.
  • Probably a corollary of the above: this is a damned-precise trackball. I didn't expect such a small ball to work this well in that regard.
  • The shape is excellent and doesn't force the wrist into an unnatural angle like the Slimblade does. I imagine the Kensington Orbit / Logitech Trackman offer something similar, but they lack an efficient way to scroll.
  • The feel of the printed material is surprisingly good. It's sturdy, nothing rattles, etc. And the “staired” texture isn't problematic against the skin either — I actually quite enjoy it. As a bonus: it looks cool and will definitely be a conversation starter in the office (if we ever get back to those, that is!).
  • Incredibly easy to service. The hardware itself can be opened in no time, and, almost as importantly, the documentation is brilliant. Too many amateur projects of this kind lack proper support pages, but the same can't be said for this trackball. I had a small issue that developed with the scroll-wheel after two weeks of use, where it started to get stuck against something else and squeak occasionally. I opened the whole thing, took apart the scroll-wheel bit, jiggled and cleaned a few things around, and the problem disappeared by itself shortly after.

  • The ball is a bit… meh. Aesthetics aside, it's a bit too light and lacks the shiny, clear coating found on Kensington's balls that gives them a hard, smooth, premium texture and feel. I have tried replacing the ball with a metal one, [as suggested by another redditor](https://old.reddit.com/Trackballs/comments/gb49nt/heavy_metal), but that was an utter failure (way too heavy to be comfortable, and doesn't work properly with the sensor). If you have other recommendations, I'm all ears.
  • It took me two weeks to start getting comfortable with the shape. My main gripe was that, while I assume it's ergonomic for many, it's a tad too small for my hands. I kept wanting to “sit” my palm atop the top of the curve, but it was too short by 1–1.5cm. If my palm is correctly cradling the device, my fingers go beyond the buttons and ball. If they sit correctly on the buttons, my palm isn't well supported by the body. I wish there were a few extra size options we could chose from when purchasing. With a piece of cloth I simulated what adding extra padding would feel like, and it seemed much better — maybe I will eventually use some kind of putty to do that.
  • The scroll wheel is not indented, yet cannot scroll freely for long. I like either the precision brought by indented wheels, or the speed granted by free-wheeling ones; this seems like a sub-optimal compromise between the two. I wish the wheel spun a smidgen faster by default, and that we could chose the scroll-wheel type at purchase time.

  • Nothing beats the convenience of the Slimblade's “ball twisting” motion for scrolling. AFAICT, the Ploopy lacks the extra sensor that would allow to implement this feature, and that motion doesn't seem very fluid with the rollers anyway (they can't follow that rotation very well, probably due to their angle?).

Overall, I'm very happy with this trackball, and the few emails we exchanged make me suspect its creator is a lovely guy to boot. If you're looking for something that goes beyond the tired commercial trackball offering that hasn't evolved much in the last 20 years, I highly recommend you give this a try.
