Trying to organize my fonts in Windows. Trying to convert old True Type fonts (or old PS Type 1 fonts) to OpenType fonts for purposes of consistency. Have some questions/problems when generating fonts.

I realize there isn't a great deal of value of converting TrueType fonts to OpenType fonts, but I am aiming for consistent formats in my installed fonts. So all Postscript Type 1, and all old True Type are being converted to OpenType.
Logic would dictate that I would convert them to Opentype (TT flavored) fonts), however I get an error when I try to do this.
Starting with my old ttf file (or my respective PS Type 1 Files). I know old True Type does not have anywhere the same type of hinting, and True Type uses quadratic bezier curves as opposed to the cubic bezier (which is just a subset anyway). Nonetheless, I seem to get everything correctly configured in Type Tool but when I first started to export them to Opentype (Truetype flavored) fonts, I always got the same error over and over... I would get a dialog box that said "The Current Font Contains Both Kerning Table and Imported Binary OpenType Tables. Do you want to use "Binary" or "Compiled"?
No matter which I selected, I would then get an error that said: The Font you are exporting contains the following Trueype tables that TypeTool cannot interpret. Some of them may not work if font was modified. [The three tables are always: GDEF, GPOS, and GSUB).] By the way when I look at the exported font, it appears fine... but I don't like this error.
On the other hand, if I instead choose to export OpenType (CFF/PS Flavored) fonts—which makes no sense because I am starting with old True Type fonts most of the time—THEN, I don't have any problems or errors whatsoever.
While trying to fiure this out, I found a coupe of theories that the OpenType (TT flavored) font gets screwed up because there is a "nominal width" set in the font info...and I just need to set this to 0. I do not recognize what "nominal width" is referring to. And I do not see this in the font metric information in Type Tool 3. So I am perplexed.
If I do export this as an OpenType (PS/CFF flavored) font... I am presuming I am looking for trouble because of the hinting differences....
But anyone who has any comment on the above would be greatly appreciated!!!
PS: I would use something like Fontlab Studio to do these conversions if I need to... but I figured Type Tool 3 would be easier.

Fontlab Studio 5.1 problem with "@", "(", and ")"...

I'm making a customized font. All my glyphs are working fine, except for "A", "(", and ")". I try to paste in "(" and ")" from Illustrator, but nothing happens. I can paste in "@", but then it doesn't show up in the main glyph menu, and won't show up when I type.
Again, all other letters and symbols are working so far.
Thanks for any help!
