That is an often asked question. And there is no clear answer. Statistically speaking, the numbers are too similar to say “This does more crosses, this creates more of that, and less in this.” In that sense are they simply, way too similar.

We all see and feel differently, and everyone trying the different versions, knows there's a difference, but explaining it, is a whole other thing. So all we can say about choosing a version, is to try them for a few games yourself, and see how it makes you feel. That is the best indicator for you, your tactics, your team, the league, for the players, and for the overall experience for a long term save. No one can tell you how you feel.

What have we changed?​

  • We have changed numbers and values in the strings.
  • We have added new strings, that adds new delay, speed, acceleration and deceleration with possibilities in delays, theoreticals, min, max, and potentials having a different outcome on players' physical behavior.
What are we not changing?​

  • We are not changing AI behavior. This is controlled by attributes, tactics, roles, instructions, and possibly more things that we are not in control of. But we are not saying that those things are not indirectly influenced by physics.
  • It does not change animations. Animations got their own speed values and time signatures. This however is possible to change, but we sincerely doubt we are going to do it with a small team. +200k lines of coding. Just alone “Pass Ball - Standing” make up for 368 strings and variation of passing the ball while standing. Anyone still saying SI did not spend a lot of time on the ME? You are wrong.

How does it impact what you see?​

  • Depending on what physics we change, will it affect what you see on the pitch.
  • Our key words are Balancing, subtlety, realism, flow and fluidity, when we are trying to find the correct changes in physics to implant. These words are subjective, and how we see the beautiful game, adding to that, each developer also sees these things possibly differently.

Will it change the match engine?​

  • Yes. Is the short answer.
  • The numbers we have changed, will not impact your results in any noticeable way. Only extreme numbers in the strings would heavily influence the statistics and results.
  • Old fixtures are already done and dusted, and are therefore not influenced.
  • This means, depending on what numbers and strings we change, the outcome of games compared to the normal json is altered.
  • @Sports interactive – “Making changes to the match engine is an incredibly complex balancing act to try and find the most enjoyable but yet also completely realistic representation of real life football.”
  • We agree with SI, that it is hard to find the correct balance between enjoyable football to watch and realisme in the outcome of results. We believe that enjoyable football to watch is a tiny bit more important than perfectly balanced tables, and specific teams having the same goals scored each season.
  • We have claimed the opposite, “no statistic changes,” this was due to corrupt data input. We are sorry for this misunderstanding. We could definitely 100% change the Match engine and the results if we wished to do it.
  • We, the players, are the deciders of what realisme is to the majority. Not a small staff at SI. And we say that realistic gameplay is subjective. Therefore multiple ME versions.

Plans for the future?​

  • That depends entirely on Sports Interactive. We have no inside information about FM21, or if this will be patched in a way, where people no longer can apply it.
  • IF they allow us to continue this work, would we of course start working on FM21’s json file, when released. Same goes for keeping FM20’s json files up to date, with new stuff we learn and can apply to it.

How to apply the mod:​

Close football manager 2020, download the mod, unzip the file, (backup original file) and replace it with the new (physical_constraints) file, in:

If you change to a neweolder json file, the game might crash in the load up. This is due to adding or deleting strings. The game has a hard time with such changes. It takes 1-2 tries before the game recognizes the changes. The maximum we have seen is 5 crashes in row when trying to load FM20.exe. When it works, will it do so, until you change the json file to another version again with new or deleted strings. This behavior also seems to be different from machine to machine, and platform to platform. Many never experience this.​

Digesting the xCloud Announcements and what it means for Stadia

I was very hesitant to write this, and it's not a doom and gloom piece it in my view a balanced piece with positives and negatives about Stadia. It will start stating the negatives and if you can read to the bottom there are a lot of positives for Stadia and ways they can show the difference. But here it there goes.
Xbox yesterday came gunning for Stadia yesterday with their xCloud announcements. No matter how you want to frame it Xbox did a hit job on Stadia. From devices, games, partners the whole shebang this was xCloud's real coming-out party and was timed to coincide with Stadia's launch next week.
The headline was 50 Games available now. They followed this up in a blog post (Xbox Wire) that 2500 games already available on Xbox and 1500 games in development are working already on xCloud. You build a game for Xbox it works on xCloud. No further development required, a clear dig at Stadia. The 50 game library will more than likely, following the announcements last night, will be at least triple that Stadia is offering next week.
I have gone about how messaging has been very poor by Stadia and yesterday Microsoft capitalized. Microsoft has been very clear that xCloud is a beta. The world knows this is not the final product. Beta is being used extensively. Compare this to Stadia and it is Founders Launch. Stadia is Launching on the 19th.
We know Stadia is a beta / early access if you read enough. After last week it appears, for me anyway, that Stadia is a very early beta / minimum viable product. I was thinking that it would have been a little further along. I digress. With Stadia marketing it as a launch people are now comparing xCloud Beta with Stadia's launch. Even though they are both betas. Unfortunately and to be frank you cannot blame people for doing that. This issue falls straight at Stadia's marketing.
Getting back to the game announcements. EA doing what EA does was not unexpected. By announcing Madden coming to xCloud (why in London should have been Fifa!), I laughed at that. The WiiU unprecedented partnership came to mind regarding EA and Stadia. EA going with Microsoft over Stadia (at least initially) should not be a big surprise. Microsoft and EA have a close arrangement for many years.
Now we get to where Microsoft may have made a mistake. During the announcement, they appeared to suggest that xCloud would be included in Gamepass. After the event, there was some clarification that it won't be however it does appear there will be an xCloud and Gamepass combo.
So how does this affect Stadia and how can Stadia show differences both in the short and longer-term. Perception is going to a hard shift in the short term. We can actually use Xbox as an example. Poor marketing decisions at the start took years to fix. The used game fiasco took many years to fix.
Stadia has many advantages over xCloud and they need to showcase them. There is no question Stadia is more powerful than xCloud. Stadia should be showcasing it and start showing off the 4k 60fps gaming. They have two games at launch in Red Dead 2 and Assassins Creed to show it off. Release gameplay footage of it running! Which leads me too.
Google owns YouTube. They should be really showing it off. They have a fair amount of people playing if the Destiny 2 screenshots are right. Upload the videos even if it is just the developers messing around playing. With Stadia linking into YouTube they really need to make more of these features.
The key launch game for me now is not RDR2 or Destiny 2. Football Manager 2020 is their key game. Stadia is now in the unique position that mouse and keyboard games are more viable on the platform than on Xbox. While all games need to have controller support Football Manager is in a unique position were playing with a mouse and keyboard is by far the best way to play.
Football Manager is a real difference between xCloud and Stadia now. You have a proper PC game, turn-based so can be played easier everywhere and more importantly Stadia only features. If you not aware Football Manager is a massive Steam game with a high player base. While this will not appeal to people who don't like football the game is an institution and they could get a lot of people interested in Stadia if they market this right.
We get to availability. This is were things can get a little murky. Stadia should be available in more places to play than xCloud due to the browser. However, with only allowing Pixel devices, this reduces the number of mobile phones significantly. I would expect that Stadia will allow more android phones quickly so Stadia should be available on more devices soon.
Where Stadia has a massive advantage here is that of TV play. While Chromecast Ultra work in the founders pack other ones should work in the coming works. There is no straight forward way to bring xCloud games to the TV screen. With only needing to bring a Chromecast with you this a major advantage of Stadia.
I have said this many times from Stadias and xClouds announcements and it still holds true today and more so from last night. xClouds biggest strength and biggest weakness is that they are tied to Xbox console hardware.
They get the strengths as we have seen from above but they also have the weaknesses of not being a pure game streaming solution. Stadia is a pure game streaming solution and with that, they have the benefits. No more patches, continuous upgrades, new ways to play, scaling, play anywhere, screen switching, cheap consumer hardware. Stadia has many more advantages over xCloud if they market them right.
Make no mistake the xCloud announcements last night hurt Stadia and I am sorry to say may have hurt them a lot. However, it is not doom and gloom as there clear differences between the services now. Some of these are bad (game library is a massive one) and some of them are good (pure streaming).
It is up to Stadia to show and prove that they mean business and the technology works. There are simple and easy things they can do and even today (release 4k 60fps RDR2 footage) to start people talking positively about Stadia.
One more nugget of positively. If Stadia was not a threat to the status quo, had potential, could be groundbreaking would it be getting talked about so much?
The xCloud announcements were not the end of Stadia. The battle lines are there and it is not up to Stadia to react.
