Nugu Roundup #66 - Get on the Gavy Train - 201122 + Final Album Giveaway of 2020

Hello and welcome to the latest Nugu Roundup!
What is this?: This is a weekly feature designed to highlight the unknown/underappreciated groups and soloists working hard in the Kpop world that often fall under the radar. Please share your own information, favorite performance videos, fanmeet stories, or anything else relevant below!
Last week we took a look at the super-nugu boy group Block Chain. This week I'd like to explore a group who I've loved for quite a while, but have been hesitant to feature for a variety of reasons. Depending on how closely you follow Korean vocal/ballad groups you may not consider them to be nugu at all, after all, they've been around since 2005. At the same time, looking through the history of posts in the subreddit their music and news has received very little attention, so I'm going to go with the 'nugu at least to the western Kpop audience' definition with them. Their music also trends towards a more 'Korean adult contemporary' vibe than traditional Idol music, but as I've featured bands that also diverge from that path in the past, and since it's autumn, which is a great time to listen to ballads, I felt y'all might be open to learning about and exploring the discography of Gavy NJ! (fans of more upbeat stuff don't despair though - they certainly have some more upbeat and fun tracks as well!) (due to the amount of content for this week's featured group there will be no soloist of the week or In Memoriam this week)
Look at the first comment below for the winner of the twentieth (and final of 2020) Nugu Roundup Album Giveaway, plus details on this week's album up for grabs!
What is Nugu?: While in Korean it literally means 'Who' in the broader Kpop context it refers to groups that are generally unknown amongst the greater public. It doesn't have to mean they're extremely new, though it can, and there are of course varying degrees of 'unknown' which some groups having very strong niche fandoms and others being almost invisible. I take a fairly broad view and will include groups that may be known to some, but who don't have widespread name recognition.
Let's get on with the show...
________________________________________________________
GAVY NJ
Who are they?: A three member vocal/ballad girl group under GoodFellas Entertainment. They debuted in 2005 (and are in fact celebrating their 15th anniversary this month). Their name came from combining the family names of the three original members (none of whom are still members of the group). Their fandom name is Happiness. Despite their long running time as a group, and while they have had some membership changes, there have only been a total of seven members, including the current three, in the 15 year history of the group.
Company: GoodFellas Entertainment has represented Gavy NJ since 2010, previously the group had with Berry Good Entertainment and Vitamin Entertainment. GoodFellas was founded by the group's primary producer Min Kyung Ki and also represents male vocal groups The Postmen and 6 to 8 as well as soloist Ara.

Twenty-Third Comeback: February 23rd, 2017 with An Obvious Melo (MV) Live Stage (Link) Live on MBC Radio (Link)
  • Song: The lead single from the group's ninth EP "An Obvious Melo" this is described as hybrid between their previous ballad style and their more recent poppier style. With the influence of Latin guitar and some retro jazz this track has sultry undertones that play well with the theme of the song of a woman hurt by the drama of love. Make sure to listen to the live performances for some amazing adlibs by Gunji, especially her great gritty belt taking the song out of the bridge into the key change. All of the group members took part in the lyric writing.

Twenty-Fourth Comeback: October 29th, 2017 with You Said You Were Happy (MV) Live Stage (Link) Pops in Seoul Live Attack (Link)
  • Song: The group's twenty-second digital single and a return to the pure ballad style. The song evokes sadness from two lovers who look back at their breakup and wonder if it was the right decision.

Twenty-Sixth Comeback: September 16th, 2018 with I'm Fine (MV) Live Stage (Link)
  • Song: The group's twenty-third digital single, this is an mid-tempo rock ballad with some incredible close vocal harmonies during the climax. The song depicts the stages of grief and acceptance after a breakup, the struggle to accept it for the best with the lingering feeling of loss.

Twenty-Seventh Comeback: April 9th, 2019 with Nothing Better Than You (MV) Live Stage (Link) Live Performance (Link)
  • Song: The group's twenty-fourth digital single, a rock ballad that evokes similar feelings to IU's Love Poem, this spring song talks of new love lost and found.
  • Composers/Producers: Min Kyung Ki (see above)
Twenty-Eighth Comeback: July 7th, 2019 with See You Again (MV) Live Stage (Link)
  • Song: The lead single from the group's 11th EP "See You Again" this is a straightforward ballad with beautiful vocal moments, in particular the delicious climax shortly after 2:20 (or 2:10 in the live version) which remains one of my favorite vocal moments in any song ever. The lyrics speak about willing to confront pain to give a failed relationship another chance while being hopeful for a better outcome.

Twenty-Ninth Comeback: January 22nd, 2020 with I'm in Sinchon (MV) Live Stage (Link)

Random Stuff:
Trivia: The group says part of the secret to their longevity is that they have many breakup songs and that many women like to listen to breakup songs after the break up. The members have individual YouTube channels with: Gunji, Seorin, and Jenny. Despite the line up changes and the many years of activity plus experimentations with new sounds the current members say the soul of the original group still lives within them and that there will always be a distinctive character to the group's sound. The group faced some controversy that their title track Lie was similar to Jennifer Lopez's Brave (which paradoxically was more popular in South Korea than the United States). The group came close to a music show win with their 2009 comeback Love Story but unfortunately it was competing with the utter-domination of SNSD's Gee, so the group had to settle for a second-place showing. Likewise the group has flirted with major chart success at various points in the past, with their first two albums reaching within the top-ten on the Gaon Album Charts, and once more with their Sunflower EP. Their peak single positions have been at 11 on the Gaon Charts with Sunfower and You Are Not the Man. Their debut album was their best seller with over 60,000 copies sold, however their physical sales have dwindled with the last several releases failing to eclipse 1,000 sales each despite the quality of their music being better than ever.
